Presented by Palmer Lake Historical Society at Palmer Lake Town Hall Palmer Lake, CO
Palmer Lake Historical Society presents: JULIE HAVERLUK Silver Fox Farming in El Paso County, CO "1920s—1950s" The Palmer Lake Historical Society is pleased to present local resident Julie Haverluk, who will share the history of silver fox farming in the Palmer Divide area. Many people are familiar with the picturesque mountain man period of Colorado history, but few people realize that in the 1920s fur once again became an important part of the Colorado economy, based not on the beaver but on the silver fox. Julie will share her research about the history of the silver fox farming and the rise and fall of the fur industry in El Paso County. Julie is a geologist by training with longtime interest in history and archaeology. She worked for eight years as a tour guide and 15 years as a translator and educator at the Academy International Elementary School. An interest the fur trade period was expanded by Marlene Brown, President of Friends of Fox Run Park, whose grandfather raised silver foxes on a farm near Monument in the 1940s and 50s. Please bring a friend and stay afterwards for light refreshments. FREE and open to the public. In case of inclement weather we follow School District #38 for weather closures. Newcomers to the area welcome. The Palmer Lake Historical Society is an educational 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization serving the Palmer Divide area since 1956.
