Sarah Velez: Body Knowing Space Pt. 2

117 E. Bijou

“I am attracted to the specific details of spaces: the texture of the walls, the cracks in the floor, the shape of a light fixture, and the way dust particles gather on surfaces. I admire their raw and quiet beauty, and strive to echo it in my work. For this project, I photographed these details alongside models and objects in the vacant storefront space in order to explore the larger theme of how all three inform one another; how the environment shapes the behavior and movements of the model, how the objects contrast from the environment. This relationship becomes even more expansive by then displaying these photographs in the very same space they were taken. The final product is a series of silver gelatin prints, which were shot with black and white film, which I processed and printed in a darkroom.”
