'The Children' by Lucy Kirkwood
Presented by Springs Ensemble Theatre at Springs Ensemble Theatre Colorado Springs, CO
The Children centers on Hazel and Robin, a retired nuclear scientist couple attempting a quiet post-disaster existence in a remote coastal cottage following a meltdown at a nearby power station. The sudden appearance of Rose, a former colleague, disrupts their controlled routine. Her visit compels the couple to confront their professional past, personal legacy, and the moral calculus of responsibility toward the world they leave behind. The intense, three-person play offers a stark meditation on aging, duty, and environmental accountability. Madalyn Rilling, SET Board Member and Director of the production, notes, "The Children" poses essential questions about our debt to the future and one another. Kirkwood's script is deeply moving and undeniably relevant. This piece highlights the strength of intimate, character-focused storytelling, and we are excited to present this work to the Colorado Springs community." The production features a cast of experienced actors: Hazel: Dinah Mann Robin: Stephen Alan Carver Rose: Amaya Egusquiza This calendar listing is brought to you by Peak Radar, the Pikes Peak region's one-stop, online website for arts and entertainment events, powered by the Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region.

A Century of Black History Commemoration: The Groves Family and Fannie Mae Duncan
Presented by Manitou Springs Heritage Museum at Manitou Springs Heritage Museum Manitou Springs, CO
During the opening reception, local musician Charles Lumpkin will speak about Black History Month and play the Black National Anthem on his saxophone. John Groves (1840-1902) and Louisa Divers Groves (1861-1943) were born in Virginia and Missouri, respectively. The son of a plantation owner and an enslaved woman, John soon showed his intelligence and was educated at a time that was illegal. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Sometime between 1886 and 1891, John and Louisa relocated to Manitou Springs, where they raised their family. Among their children: Harry Augustus (1891-1978), father of Harry Edward Groves (1921-2013), who would study at Harvard and become a respected law professor at universities around the nation. Fannie Mae Duncan was renowned as the founder and owner of the Cotton Club in downtown Colorado Springs, where her motto was “everybody welcome.” Her portion of the exhibit will include photos taken at the club in 1955. Fannie Mae Bragg was born in Alabama in 1918. Her family fled Alabama after a racially motivated murder and settled briefly in Oklahoma, Eventually, the family moved to Colorado Springs and Fannie Mae found work at the Manitou Spa. She married Ed Duncan in 1939 and the couple purchased a two-story building at 25 W. Colorado Ave. that would become the Cotton Club. Performers including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Flip Wilson, Etta James and B.B. King appeared there over the years to entertain audiences of all races. 'Where We Stand'
Presented by Ent Center for the Arts at Ent Center for the Arts Colorado Springs, CO
Written by Donnetta Lavinia Grays and Directed by Marisa Hébert. A stranger stands before us with a story—and a deal. In Where We Stand, a poetic and electrifying one-person play, a lonely soul makes a choice that could change everything. Part fable, part confession, and part communal reckoning, this contemporary tale invites the audience to step into the storyteller’s shoes and cast a vote of their own. Directed by Marisa Hébert (Flyin’ West, Every Brilliant Thing), this spellbinding modern parable explores the consequences of mercy, the cost of belonging, and the ties that bind us together. Making its Colorado debut, Where We Stand is a haunting journey into the heart of human connection. UCCS students are always free. Contact the box office in person or by phone with your student ID to reserve seats. This production contains themes of isolation, metaphysical bargaining, and moral ambiguity. If you have questions about the material or wish to read a copy of the work in advance, please email theatreworks@uccs.edu.
